A Better Covenant

You Don’t Have to Earn It

If you remember one thing today, let it be this:
We don’t have to earn God’s approval because Jesus is our high priest.

That’s the heartbeat of Hebrews. Over and over, it shows us that Jesus is better—better than the old systems, better than the old way of trying to measure up.

Understanding the Old vs. New Covenant

In the Old Testament, God established a covenant—a sacred relationship—with His people. It included laws… a lot of them. Over 600 commandments covering everything from moral behavior to diet to rituals.

Some of those laws still make sense to us today—like not stealing or harming others. Others feel very specific to that time—like food restrictions or clothing rules. And that can raise questions: why follow some and not others?

Because those laws served different purposes.

  • Moral laws reflect God’s character—timeless truths.
  • Ceremonial laws pointed forward—to Jesus.

The old system showed people something important: we can’t reach perfection on our own. It revealed the need for a Savior.

And then Jesus came—not to add more rules, but to fulfill what we couldn’t.

When Grace Gets Misunderstood

I remember sitting in a coffee shop once when someone told me God was disappointed in me… because I was wearing black jeans. They were convinced I wasn’t living like a Christian.

And it stuck with me—not because I believed it, but because I knew that wasn’t who God is.

If our faith turns into a checklist, we’ve missed the point.

There are still people who live like it’s all about earning approval—doing enough, being enough, checking the right boxes. But that’s not the gospel.

Jesus Finished the Work

In Hebrews, we see a powerful image: earthly priests never sat down. Their work was never done.

But Jesus? He sits at the right hand of God.

Because it’s finished.

You don’t have to keep striving for something Jesus already secured.

So Why Do We Still Strive?

Sometimes it’s about control. It feels safer to measure things. To say, “If I just do enough, I’ll be okay.”

But that leads to exhaustion—not freedom.

The truth is: you are already invited in.

Living in the Freedom of Grace

So what does that actually look like?

  • Stop defining yourself by your failures. God doesn’t.
  • Confess without fear. You’re already welcomed.
  • Live with joy, not heaviness. The burden isn’t yours to carry.
  • Draw near daily. Not just when you feel “good enough.”
  • Extend grace to others. Just like you’ve received it.
  • Live with confidence. You are fully known and fully loved.
  • Stop trying to earn what’s already yours.

The Invitation

For a long time, I thought I had to get everything right before taking a step toward God. I waited to feel “good enough.”

But that moment never came.

What changed was realizing I didn’t have to earn it.

And neither do you.

Because Jesus already paid the price.
Because grace is real.
Because the door is open.

So the question is simple:
Are you living like the cross was enough?

Because it is.
