Calmer Of The Storm
Scott Eastveld

Everybody has storms.

Some are obvious, while others are hidden behind a smile and a cheerful “Good morning.” We never really know what someone else is carrying, which is a good reason to be kind.

In Mark 4, the disciples find themselves in a storm—not because they’ve done something wrong, but because they’re following Jesus. It’s an important reminder: following Jesus doesn’t mean we won’t encounter storms. Sometimes following Jesus takes us right into one.

“Don’t You Care?”

As the waves crash over their boat, Jesus is asleep. The disciples wake him with an honest question: “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

Isn’t that often our question, too? When prayers seem unanswered and life feels overwhelming, we wonder, God, if you care, why is this happening?

Jesus speaks, and the wind dies down. The waves become calm. But the deeper question isn’t just what Jesus can do. It’s who Jesus is. Even the wind and waves obey him. Mark is revealing that Jesus is more than a teacher; he is the Messiah, with authority even over the forces of chaos.

Faith in the Storm

This story doesn’t promise that enough faith will make every storm disappear. Sometimes circumstances change; sometimes they don’t. The disciples had Jesus in the boat, and the storm still came.

The presence of Jesus doesn’t prevent every storm, but we don’t have to face the storm alone.

Faith isn’t pretending everything is fine or never feeling afraid. Sometimes faith sounds like, “I’m scared, but I’m still trusting. I don’t understand, but I’m still here.”

We can pray for healing, reconciliation, provision, and change. But we can also ask Jesus for peace and strength when the storm continues. Sometimes Jesus calms the storm around us. Sometimes he begins by calming the storm within us.

Jesus Is Still in the Boat

Whatever you’re facing today, bring Jesus your fear, your questions, and your uncertainty. You don’t have to clean yourself up before you wake Jesus up. The disciples came to him exactly as they were, and Jesus met them there.

Maybe your prayer is, “Jesus, calm the storm.” Or perhaps it’s, “Jesus, help me trust that you’re with me while the storm continues.”

The waves may still be loud, and you may not know how everything will turn out. But remember: Jesus is still in the boat.
